QuartzCom crystal specializes in small and medium batches of special crystal oscillators
In the past, coftech purchased oscillating crystals for its own production of VC-TCXO crystals and other oscillators in Japan. For example, cofftech supplied QuartzCom, based in Grenchen, Switzerland, with precision crystals from Japan. They are used in high quality oscillators in base stations for mobile communications, radar, measuring instruments and GPS devices. However, the supply of quartz crystals required for these high-quality oscillators will be difficult in the future. This is because small batch quartz production with different frequencies is no longer attractive to large Japanese quartz manufacturers. In order to accommodate the demands of high production volumes, such as consumer goods markets, Japanese manufacturers have stopped producing precision quartz crystals, which are not very profitable for them.
To secure its own quartz crystal sourcing, QuartzCom invested in a family-run Japanese company that specializes in these quartz crystals. To that end, the Swiss company is building a new production line and has purchased modern machines that are currently being installed. Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year.
The line will focus on package sizes of 7mm × 5mm, 6.0mm × 3.5mm and 5.0mm × 3.2mm, which are very strict requirements for quartz crystal tolerances. In addition to AT cutting, SC, IT or quartz blanks with special cutting angles are used. - In the future, QuartzCom will produce a new generation of "QC-MESA" type TCXO. The "old" IC was discontinued due to a production fire at IC manufacturer AKM, which produces ics for (VC) TCXO. The new generation of integrated circuits requires higher crystal performance than before. As a result, devices using oscillators from QuartzCom will never lose GPS signals. This also applies to GPS units exposed to extremely strong vibrations in tractors. Together with engineers produced in Japan, QuartzCom crystal Oscillator optimizes the cutting Angle and size of the quartz blank. In a further step, the oscillator is calibrated in a temperature chamber where the installed integrated circuit is coaxed out of its final potential. In-house software has been developed for this purpose. QuartzCom therefore serves a special niche market: crystals and oscillators of special frequencies for small and medium volume production. In doing so, the company guarantees that the oscillator will work perfectly even under extreme conditions.
